flaming lips

embryonic by the flaming lips has restored some of my possibly waning faith in good old indie rock, this record is densely orchestrated with buried vocals but in a good way, which is pretty hard to do. My faith is back on track, sans agrees with me, give this record a listen. I am not one of those folks who lost faith in the flaming lips by a long shot, to me they are one of the better bands out there, well for stuff I would never personally want to play.
not to mention awesome cover art.
also ordered this guitar from japan

mij fender tele custom, double bound and creme'd binding. ooh la la
I am going to play this thing!

Robert Pollard = yeah

A long day here, mostly sitting on the couch. I just recently picked up the new Boston Spaceships record which is great, it led me to a long and arduous sitting with the guided by voices collection. So good in every way. If you don't listen to them, then you know you should now.
Went to a good friends wedding yesterday and probably over drank, celebratory indeed. It was great to see sans have such a good time.

Also picked up the vox ac30hh head up there, lovely tone maker/ noise machine of joy.

Grooms + Royal Bangs = wooh

Finally got to see Grooms (AKA Muggabears) after listening to them for a few years now, I was impressed, this is a band that should be around for a long time, quality songwriting and noise inundated fun. Their new record "Rejoicer" comes out on 10/20 and man is it well worth picking up. Check it out if you love polvo, sonic youth and so on.
Also got to see the Royal Bangs again, this band impresses me so much, they somehow got even more dancey, I don't know how but they did it and the guitarists had awesome facial hair happening, lol but really, they were superb.

well howdy doo dah

it's been a while since I posted, but with the pandemic h1n1 knocking on the proverbial door I thought I would drop in and say hi, HI.
I saw a youtube of thom yorke playing with flea yesterday and well, as it wasn't truly bad per se, it made me think of Charlie and candy mountain from robot chicken. Those wacky unicorns.
Since my last post infinity things have transpired, Sans = XOxoXO
Went to Ren Fest, threw some axes.
and have found myself chasing the vintage vox unicorns like pictured above.

Looking forward to the next 14 days, Royal Bangs and Grooms (aka muggabears) are playing here.

glad to have my head back

felt like I was in the clouds there for a bit. My new band had it's first show the other night and it went pretty well, actually a lot better than I had hoped. Also hell week of work is over and man, things can get back to normal soon :D
I have missed actually thinking/talking
I watched these two guys down the way talking about how perverted they are at work, then they saw a girl walk up in a dress, of course chivalry got the better of them and one opened that oh so heavy door for her, then they commented on her ass at full volume. Hey dudes! I sit up front sometimes and if there is no crapola music playing you can hear people outside if they're loud, which you two pissbags were.

oof, love the sg classic

I played one of these on a random tangent (I had been looking at semi hollow body Grestch's) long story short, I really really liked it, extremely playable and the action was actually right? Perhaps these guitars come from some other Gibson plant? The binding on the neck was also a bonus and smooth as butter.
UPS killed one of my amps, it was a sad day for me, see pictured:

even in it's battered state it looked awesome, UPS is not being cool about paying for the damages again.

I have a headache and well, I slept all day, sans is the best.
I was watching Jurassic park 3, amazing!

listening to hood again and coveting Traynor heads. AKA: Kale makes me toot

Started listening to Hood- Cold House on repeat at the office, for some people this would be a sad affair as they write some epic sad bastard music, but for me this was a call to arms of sorts, it really helped me put some music stuff in perspective. They have been a favorite of mine for quite a long time but for the last 6 months or so I probably haven't listened to them for longer than the Home Is Where it Hurts EP, which I HIGHLY recommend to anyone!
I have been coveting the smaller wattage handwired Traynor heads, I love the tone on my recent pick up but I feel like with the amount of turbulence this 45 watter has I bet the little 25 watter would be loud enough to play with a drummer.

also, Kale makes me toot.
Sans made a delicious little Kale based meal that I had like 3 servings of, kudos to my babe!

feeling even worse

not capable of a single actual thought, listening to giardini di miro, the best band from Italy that I have ever heard this ep in specific does it for me, oh and the song that hood does of theirs is also amazing.

gonna sit around with the duo-sonic for the majority of this evening since my brain is fried out

hey, my lady is rad

not feeling too awesome

listened to a lot of centro-matic over the last week though, quite an underappreciated band.

think i have some kind of flu maybe or whatever my throat is killing me, maybe it's just a general "The weather changed mighty abruptly bodily objection", either way it sucks.
This weekend was Pippin, it was pretty awesome, the stage was well done and very pleasing to the eye, the lady does wee good work!
Many things happened in a very short period of time this weekend and hey, pretty much the last 7 days, not too much to post about during that time because I was sucked into music, work, sans, sleep, etc.

Got this Bluesbreaker clone cab the other day and wired it up in parallel, sitting upon it is the mighty 1965 bassman head, quite expected these two together = SUPER LOUD
see pictured :

sorry we didn't get to talk more Naomi and Donna!

working on new material

well we are now working on a ton of new material, it's fun, I am enjoying playing the songs we're doing now, like a stripped down sonicsaurdohjrfanclubunwound. Something else!

oh and ups is fighting me on my twin being smashed by them, a true delight, I figure if you insure something and it gets smashed in transit by a shipping company they should reimburse you the amount you insured the package for, amirite? I think so.

picked up this little vibrolux reverb amp on the fly and i love the cleans on it, quite a cool little customer!
Also thrilling is this Beaver Stuffing Kit, you know you want this!

currently listening to His Name Is Alive

pictured is Andy_Fm of said band. I loved their live show I caught in 2007, one of my all time favorite bands from growing up in Detroit.

reflecting on Larry, amongst other things

Given the current socio-economic climate and the brink of supreme destruction that seems to have everyone on the abyss of failure and greatness in one swift laser shot to the head, I find myself thinking of Larry. Larry was my father's best friend for many years, he was a substantial drinking pro who seemed to have ultimate knowledge on subjects like : Plastic Extrusion and Node Rocks. Plastic was his thing, oh and he excelled in fixing clutches on older chevrolet's, key to his existence overall other things was the Node Rock and Miller Lite or Budweiser. I was speaking of him last night to Sans and man, I forgot how amazing he was. I worked with him the summer I was 19 years old, I inhaled hefty plastic fumes and listened to My Bloody Valentine and Sonic Youth the whole time on my boombox whilst working with him, or rather while I watched him get drunk at work and I smoked cigs on the loading dock, I can't remember much else about that job, I was there but it's gone now. I remember him falling asleep at the wheel and running over two mailboxes, I swiftly socked him in the face to alert him to the goings-on. He also sunk lower over time to the level of stealing my sister's 10-speed, after which my father disowned him. The Node Rock, a detail I almost left out. Larry once kicked a rock outside of a kiss concert, my father says he was on lsd or something like that, from what I heard later at that same job, the rock floated in front of Larry and said his name, then it flew away. AMAZING! I wonder where he is now.
Larry, where are you now man?

here's a random picture of my band playing a show sometime in DC. lol, I forgot about this show, I thought we sucked but the live recording of it was actually quite nice.

I have been rocking out to Sebadoh and Versus almost exclusively for a few days now and it feels pretty good to me.

thanks for reading, thanks for the memories Larry.

shjips

I went to ship an amp, an exceptionally heavy amp mind you, and the UPS store had closed 2 minutes prior to my arrival. I think that sets the tone for today pretty well.

aside from that, Andrew Kenney of American Analog Set has a new ban, the wooden birds, I bet it's gonna be huge for some reason.

party monster

this movie "Party Monster" is so over the top that I can hardly stand to watch it.

That aside, I had a moment today where I realized that a band I hated on for a while is actually quite good, sorry about that Lucero, you are actually quite alright in my book. I say this because I saw a movie that they did the soundtrack for and well, I appreciated it's subtlety, I am not sure how the records would sound.

I was thinking back on my first "Real" electric guitar today, a peavey predator probably from the mid 80's that my gramps bought for me, he hated electric guitars so in retrospect this was a big deal :D
thanks gramps!

this is my lion handpuppet

Don't hate cuz you can't relate.
I watched a lot of tv today for absolutely no reason, it was either the tube or sleep.
new tuning in play : EADFAE

I was watching newer dinosaur jr footage on youtube tonight, I was pleased to see "Out There" is being played, I always loved that song. I spent a good part of the day playing my jazzmaster as well.

the weather being superb

the day being stellar, sans is knitting, I just sealed the deal on a pre-cbs bandmaster head with a nice cab looks like this :

mm-hmm, tasty like biscuits & gravy on a sunday morning. Band stuff seems to have sorted itself out for the time being and all is productive and flourishing. I shipped a box to grand rapids today, funny considering I have been there like 40 times in my life to ship something there 10 years after I left that state. I feel the urge to see a movie, not on demand for once.

the final 4 are not cylons at all

I got this record today:
Marnie Stern is exactly what I'd expect Wyld Stallionz to sound like only better, love this right now. Definitely goodtimes music with gratuitous finger taps all over the place.

heavy amps = broken backs

well today has been interesting, I just had to cancel my band's next show and I am not feeling the best about, there was an all out weird conversation last night wherein I had to tell it like it is. Always feels like I am preaching, haha. The pastor of noise guitar.
Have you had Campbell's chicken corn chowder?
It's the rulingest soup I have had in a long time, might as well be homemade.
Sans and I consume it in mass quantities. Speaking of her, she rules!
I have been pondering amps a lot lately, my twin reverb is too much amp for me to really take to shows and I am thinking of going with another head/cab set up. I am milling around about 3 different heads, updates later.

Today I watched this Sonic Youth live footage on youtube
I love you golden blue

not sure how to embed them as of yet as I am just now trying to get into blogging anyhow.

2 posts in a row

instead of editing my earlier post I am going to add a few things with this post. Sans bought me this book and I love it.
and then there was this!

some stuff

new jazzmaster :P
and a new picture of thurston moore.
Picked up the jazzmaster recently and just fellin love with the matching headstock, it's sort of the coolest thing I have picked up in a long while.

other things:
I have had a migraine for a while and Sans made us some really righteous tuna salad stuff. Delicious.
I have other thoughts but for now I will leave you with this: You look at yourself in the mirror and wonder sometimes if that's really the way other people see you, as it is you are accustomed to your own perception of that view, maybe to other people your eyes look black.
